The owner’s grieving son, Jerry Seigle, longed for someone, anyone, to help. This sparked a fire that would change the world. 1938 began what we now know to be the Golden Age of comic books, when the ‘Super-Man’ was born, reshaping mythology for the modern age. Two immigrants now living in America, Jerry Seigle and Joe Shcuster created the first superhero: Superman, the alien from another world, landing in America, stopping robberies and saving lives. In the 1930’s, unemployment had reached an all time high and the great depression loomed over the population, who were scraping by on pennies while the wealthy elites still made millions. It was fitting that Superman was a bold character that took on villains like mine owners who exploited workers and of course the business tycoon, Lex Luthor. Superman’s iconic appearance was inspired by the strong men showcased in circuses and bodybuilding contests. The spit curl in his hair even came from that generation’s Tarzan. As mobster-crime was on the rise during the 30’s and 40’s, Bob Kane and Bill Finger subconsciously responded by creating the Batman: a dark hero who skulks around in the night, fighting gangsters and corrupt politicians. What’s most important about Batman is the oath he takes as a child after losing his parents in a mugging: “I swear on the spirits of my parents that I will spend my life warring on all criminals.” Even Batman’s nemesis, the Joker, is the ultimate symbol of urban chaos.
